so far this year
I forget most of what I read last year, so this year I wanted to keep a kind of Book Journal, but maybe something more encompassing. Here’s a list of all the books I’ve read or listened to so far this year and all the movies and TV shows I’ve seen (for the first time). Let’s watch my taste evolve, shall we? (Starred reviews are scored out of five.)
Books:
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green **** (FEELINGS.)
Movies:
Sherlock Holmes (2009) ***
(Not impressed. I hate movies that end in a big reveal! I mean, a climax, sure. But there was nothing to hold my interest throughout. However, I liked Irene Adler more here than in BBC!verse. Don’t hate me.)
Thor (2011) ***
(For Loki and no other reason. He was the only dynamic character and honestly…good looking. Yeah, fuck you too. I’m still a girl.)
Grandma’s Boy (2006) ****
(This was Craig’s idea and I can’t say that I mind so much. I have to be in the right state of mind for films like these, but I’ll be damned if it wasn’t funny. A departure from my norms, but still…four stars.)
DMT: The Spirit Molecule (2010) ****
(I know I don’t talk about it a lot, but drug culture is really interesting to me. The Spirit Molecule was very informative and hearing first hand experience is fasctinating. Also, that one guy. Oh god…)
Prog Rock Britannia (2009) ****
(Another of Craig’s selections, PRB was a somewhat chronologialy look at the Prog Rock scene in Britain and the US. I came out of the experience with a better understanding of Craig’s, shall we say, odd tastes in music. And, for the record, old Prog guys are HILARIOUS.)
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) ****
(I entered the experience of my first silent film with what I hoped was an open mind and that mind was BLOWN! I think, for half the time, I just sat there muttering “The SETS though!” to my friend. As for as horror goes, don’t expect to be properly frightened since, you know, it’s not properly frightening. But if you’ve never seen a silent film before, here is a good place to start. The first of many, I hope!)
Oliver & Company (1988) ****
I only wanted to give Oliver four stars because I’m saving my five! 2shayster2 reccomended that I watch this, especially since I’d somehow grown up without it! So, after a trip to Goodwill, I came home with a couple of previously love VHS tapes. =) Oliver made me cry FROM THE BEGINNING (which I should have known it would since the suggestion came from a sadist) and I loved every subsequent minute. I kept saying to myself “God, this animation looks so AUTHENTIC!” before remembering that it’s from the 80’s. But holy crow! I especially dug the music, which is also not surprising considering Classic Disney.
Television:
Sherlock (BBC) Season Two *****
(First full marks! Because it’s fucking Sherlock!)
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984-85) ****
(I believe I’ve only seen maybe two episodes, but I have the rest on my flash drive to watch…when I can. Quite enjoyable!)
Supernatural Season One ****
(The first episode had me in tears because I was like, “I hope the girlfriend DIES!” But then she did and I felt badly. I wanted to just watch ALL of the first season in one night, but it got TOO SCARY. For me, that was surprising. But I gathered myself a few days later and finished a few more episodes. Still not finished, but I have the files!)
